Bumper Safety and Repair
Even at very low speeds, a collision can cause damage to your bumper. If the shock is absorbed and you stay safe, the damage to a bumper is a small price to pay for your life or more costly damages to the car’s body. Damage to your bumper can also occur if you scrape it on a tree, wall, or other abrasive surface. Since most bumpers today are made of plastic, they scratch easily. The resulting scratches on your bumper can be unsightly and can lower the resale value of your car. While you can’t completely avoid damages to a bumper over the life of a car, you can take steps to protect your car’s bumper from possible harm:
- Be aware of how close you are to solid objects that could dent or scrape the front or back bumper.
- Drive defensively and be on the lookout for vehicles that may collide into yours.
- When parallel parking, maintain enough space between you and the cars in front of and behind yours.
- Look in all directions before backing up.
- Drive slowly and cautiously.
