Looking After Your Car Battery


The battery in your car in one device that supplies the electricity needed to start up your car. It also provides power to other components such your radio, lights, ignition and many more. Which is why it is important take care of your battery by doing regular and simple checks. A car battery is subject to wear and tear, just like any other car component and an initial simple examination of the battery can reveal some problem areas.

Firstly check that the battery is firmly in place and not loose. Also examine the whole battery for cracks, in this case you should replace the battery. Also have a look at the terminals for corrosion or dirt build up and also check that the cables connecting the terminals of the battery are not broken. If there is extensive damage, then this should be replaced. Whenever you start to work on a battery, it is important that you disconnect it. When you disconnect it, you should always remove the negative cable first.

If you notice deposits on the terminals, you should clean this off with the battery cables removed. You can sprinkle some baking soda on each terminal and by dipping an old toothbrush in water, and you can scrub this unwanted deposit away. Once complete you can then dry everything with a clean and dry rag. When you are done, you can connect the battery cables but ensure that the positive cable is placed first, and the negative cable is last.
